Fans and celebrities are still reeling from the mysterious death of Darius Campbell Danesh, the beloved singer and actor whose career took off in 2001 after placing third in the first season of pop idol in the United Kingdom. The producers reinvented and transformed that show into American Idol the following year, with judge Simon Cowell traveling from London to Los Angeles to launch the American production.
Despite coming in third place, Danesh quickly rose to fame with multiple hits and starred in major musical theater productions in the UK. According to YahooNews, Danesh began dating actress Natasha Henstridge in 2004, moved to the United States, and the couple married in 2011. They separated two years later but tried to reconcile in 2016, only to finalize their divorce in 2018.
In a since deleted Instagram post which featured a photo of her with Danesh and another of them with their children from a previous marriage, Henstridge wrote: “There are no words Darius… just Love Love Love.”
Here’s the latest on the singer’s death and celebrity tributes arriving:
Mystery surrounds the artist’s death
According to the Rochester Post-Bulletin, The 41-year-old man was found unresponsive in his bed in a luxury apartment across the street from Mayo Clinic’s St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Mayo Clinic is considered the No. 1 hospital in the world and frequently attracts high-profile patients. It has not been confirmed that Danesh was a patient of Mayo, but The Berkman, the apartment complex where he was staying, is known for offering short-term luxury suites for people who need easy access to Mayo’s various medical buildings.
A statement issued on August 16 by Danesh’s family did not provide any information as to why the artist, who was looking forward to a television reunion of pop idol in England this fall, he was staying in Rochester, a small city 87 miles south of Minneapolis. According to Hello Magazine, the family said they had been told by local police there were no signs of intent or suspicious circumstances. In the meantime, The Daily Record reported that the family may have to wait 8 weeks for toxicology reports.
Though it’s still unclear why, Danesh may have been in Rochester for at least a few weeks because locals saw his best friend, fellow Scottish actor Gerard Butler, in town several times. In July, radio station KROC reported that He had been seen several times, posting photos of himself at a weekly food and music festival that takes place during lunchtime downtown on Thursdays. He was also seen at two local bars. A week later, radio station Y.105FM reported that he was spotted at the Olmstead County Fair taking photos with two local sheriff’s deputies.
However, even Butler seems shocked by his friend’s death. On August 18, he posted a photo on Instagram of them together, along with a lengthy tribute to their lifelong friend.
“I am devastated by the sudden passing of my dear friend Darius, a true brother,” he wrote, later expressing condolences to Danesh’s parents and siblings.
He continued, “Those who were lucky enough to have known Darius for more than a few minutes were deeply moved by his infectious laugh and zest for life. He always wore a smile, had a booming voice and gave a genuinely warm hug that few could or would resist! He was an incredible talent, a singer whose voice touched your soul and an actor with a great presence. But, most importantly, he had the heart of a lion. He was bigger and brighter than the sun and had such contagious energy that he could light up a room in seconds.”
Celebrities and fans expressed shock and sadness
Butler may have been the closest celebrity to Danesh, but many others have expressed their shock at his passing and memories of their time with him.
On August 17, actress Rosario Dawson posted a sweet photo on Instagram of Butler and Danesh giving her playful kisses on both cheeks and wrote, “Beloved Darius, you have left us reeling in a state of shock and sadness that are as palpable as your feelings. hugs and your laugh. You were one of the greats.”
Although Danesh placed third in the inaugural season of pop idolJudge Simon Cowell, who would soon be heading to the United States to launch American Idol, still offered the singer a record deal. But Danesh rejected him, according to the BBC, choosing instead to work with U2 and Rolling Stones producer Steve Lillywhite, scoring multiple top 10 hits in the UK. However, Cowell issued a gracious statement after the news of Danesh’s passing.
“I first saw Darius on television over 20 years ago and got to know him very well,” Cowell said. “He was charismatic, funny and just a great person to be around. His death, being someone so young, is an absolute tragedy and my heart goes out to his family and friends.”
Chris Martin and his band, Coldplay, acknowledged Danesh’s passing during their August 17 concert in London.
“We are going to send love from Wembley to the world,” said the singer before the packed stadium. “Let’s send love to Darius’s family, our old friend Darius, and to Ukraine,” according to the Daily Mail.
Rosie Nixon, editor-in-chief of Britain’s Hello magazine, wrote in a personal post: “Oh Darius, such a sweet soul. Tragic news. I’ll remember his gentle, soft Scottish voice when he called with an idea, usually he was the one who called directly instead of an agent. He once invited the entire Hello team over for a night out to see his latest show. It was a love, a rare jewel”.
