Gaumont (EPA:GAM) Shareholders Have Enjoyed An Impressive 128% Share Price Gain

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. One great example is Gaumont SA (EPA:GAM) which saw its share price drive 128% higher over five years. It’s down 1.3% in the last seven days.

Gaumont isn’t currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That’s because it’s hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

For the last half decade, Gaumont can boast revenue growth at a rate of 1.7% per year. Put simply, that growth rate fails to impress. In comparison, the share price rise of 18% per year over the last half a decade is pretty impressive. Shareholders should be pretty happy with that, although interested investors might want to examine the financial data more closely to see if the gains are really justified. It may be that the market is pretty optimistic about Gaumont.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We’ve already covered Gaumont’s share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Gaumont’s TSR of 140% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

Gaumont provided a TSR of 3.5% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 19% a year, over half a decade) look better. It’s quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we’ve identified 3 warning signs for Gaumont (1 is potentially serious) that you should be aware of.
