‘Mean Girls’ characters who came out in real life: Demian is one of them

3 of the protagonists of Mean Girls O Heavy Girls, the 2004 film starring Lindsey Lohan, came out years after the premiere of the film.

Mean Girls is a 2004 film directed by Tina Fey and starring herself, Lindsey Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Franzese y Jonathan Bennett.

The story portrays the teenage life of Cady, a high school girl who enters a new school where she meets a group of girls nicknamed ‘Plastic’ and discovers how cruel they can be to each other and to their classmates.

Some of its protagonists came out years after the release of Mean Girls, which is curious since the theme of the film revolves around tolerance and acceptance between people.

Rajiv Surendra (Kevin G.)

Rajiv Surendra played Kevin G., Cady’s schoolmate with a talent for math and who is remembered for singing a rap song on the winter talent show.

Surendra retired from acting to become a writer and graphic artist after failing to land the lead role in the film. Life of Pi.

In an interview with Kajal Mag, the Canadian actor said that he did not come out publicly before Life of Pi because he was afraid of not getting papers because of his sexual orientation.

“I know very well that if I were an openly gay actor, there would be no way I would be considered for the role of a religious 16-year-old Indian boy in a movie,” Surendra said in the interview.

The actor moved to Amsterdam and the city’s liberal vibe helped him realize “how easy it was” to portray himself to the world as gay while dating men.

“Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I had gotten that role. Maybe I would be in my apartment in New York waiting for my next character, still in the closet, afraid of not getting a role if I was openly gay, “said the actor.

Jonathan Bennett (Aaron Samuels)

Jonathan Bennett played Aaron Samuel in Mean Girls, the romantic interest of the protagonist and for whom she has a conflict with Regina George, the character of Rachel McAdams, being her boyfriend.

Bennett’s character was a handsome straight man in the movie; however, he had already come out with his close friends at the time, but not publicly.

“No one specifically, but everyone told me to stay in the closet. We lived in a strange world in which we actors who worked in the public eye and were gay did not know what to do.

“There comes a time in your life when you realize that it just doesn’t matter and it’s not worth living completely open about how you are,” Jonathan Bennett said in an interview with TooFab.

Daniel Franzese (Demian)

The third character of Mean Girls declared homosexual is Demian, Cady’s friend and played by Daniel Franzese.

Like his co-stars, the actor was in the closet until 2014, on the 10th anniversary of Mean Girls, when he received a letter from a fan telling him that Demian’s character made him respected at his school for physical similarities after being bullied for being overweight and gay.

“And he said to me: ‘Thank you very much, I don’t know if you’re gay or not …’, but then I realized how important it is to come out of the closet. [para las figuras públicas].
