A video message from Robert Downey Jr. to Scarlett Johansson celebrating her recent award win turns into a prank.
A new video sees Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson tricking Robert Downey Jr., who played Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In a video posted to Twitter by Chris Gardner, Downey explains all of the messages that he’s recorded recently, saying he’s going to pass on a tribute for Johansson in honor of her having been the 35th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award. He’s told that all of the other Avengers actors have already recorded their messages and eventually relents. Soon, Downey begins reading a script prepared by Johansson and her husband, comedian Colin Jost, that gets increasingly more ridiculous until the actor discovers that he’s been had. The entire thing is, obviously, meant as one big joke.
The other thing is, Robert Downey Jr. is REALLY going to commit to a bit. Here he turns down Scarlett Johansson tribute (because all the other Avengers have done it is reason enough to pass) before reading the joke Teleprompter script. pic.twitter.com/29mZrARRe0

Downey first appeared as Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man, which launched the MCU. Two years later, Downey returned for a sequel, 2010’s Iron Man 2. That film actually saw Johnasson make her debut as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. The two went on to start in several more films together, including all four Avengers movies.
Both Iron Man and Black Widow died during the events of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. While there’s no indication Downey will return to the MCU in the future, Johansson did return as Romanoff for a Black Widow solo film earlier this year. That film’s dual release on Disney+ and in theaters resulted in Johansson filing a lawsuit against Disney for breach of contract that has since been settled.
Outside of her work in the MCU, Johansson is an actor known for her work on such films as 2001’s Ghost World, 2003’s Lost in Translation and 2019’s Marriage Story. She’s received a number of prestigious awards and is one of the highest-grossing actors ever. The next project featuring her will be Sing 2, in which she plays a porcupine named Ash. Sing 2 is set for wide release on Dec. 22.
Before starring in the MCU, Downey made a name for himself with such films as 1992’s Chaplin, 2005’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and the Sherlock Holmes series. Currently, he’s set to star in Jamie Foxx’s All-Star Weekened and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The former of those movies does not have a set release date, while the latter is slated for July 21, 2023. Downey has also served as executive producer for Netflix’s adaptation of Sweet Tooth and HBO ‘s Perry Mason series.
